Installing NT Workstation 4.0:
Video drivers

Finding the right drivers

The drivers available for the Chips & Technologies 65535 from the C&T web site do not work with the PC110. They throw up STOP errors just as the desktop is being displayed. This is because these drivers require 1MB of video RAM.

I thought this was a show-stopper, until a gent by the name of Bob Tapp sent me an e-mail telling me that he'd found alternate C&T 65535 drivers, and that they worked. It turns out these drivers were written by a third party software company, on behalf of IBM's Retail Systems division, who used the 512KB C&T 65535 in several of their products. Two versions of the C&T 65535 driver are available at the Retail Systems FTP site - one that supports 512KB setups, and one that supports 1MB + setups. Bob says he's seen problems with slight display corruption if the system is booted out of the docking station; I've not seen this yet, but I've only been running NT 4 again for a couple of days...

The drivers available from the IBM FTP site are an 814KB download, that unpack to a diskette containing 4 files totalling 122KB. Not a great compression ratio :-) I have repackaged this video driver as a .ZIP file - it contains exactly the same four files as the IBM download, it's just that it's now 48KB in size.

Click here to download my 48KB .ZIP of the drivers, here to download the 814KB IBM distribution of the same drivers, or here to read more detail on these drivers (this centres around the IBM Retail Systems machines that use this video chipset)
