Smartdrive

Wherever you're installing from, but particularly if you're installing from files on the hard drive, use SMARTDRV to read-cache the source drive and write-cache the target drive. By default, most version of SMARTDRV read-cache all drives anyway, but to enable write-cacheing, issue the command SMARTDRV X+ (if X is the target drive) - don't include a colon after the drive letter. To check the current cacheing status, just issue the command SMARTDRV on its own.

Windows' analysis of your computer

Depending on the version of Win95 you are installing, you may be prompted by a window entitled Analysing Your Computer which states

Select the non-default option of No - I want to modify the hardware list to be taken to a screen where you can uncheck all classes or models of hardware that you want to leave out of the analysis. Doing this allows you to cut out lots of time-consuming (for a 486-33) probing for devices you know it's never going to find!

Unchecking all of these four categories should bring the analysis phase down to less than a minute.
