Installing Windows 95:
|
The PC110 uses an ESS 488 AudioDrive chipset - this gives 8-bit mono SoundBlaster-compatible wave audio, plus basic MIDI synthesis. I'm no music buff, so can't say what MIDI sysnthesis chip is used/emulated, nor how good the MIDI drivers are, but it does seem to be limited in the 'voice' (concurrent instrument) department. Hey, it bleeps and blurps a recognisable, if sometimes clumsy, tune, so I'm happy...
On the hardware side, I recommend you treat it as a standard SB Pro, and it'll cause you no problems. That means setting the I/O to 220h and 388h, the IRQ to 5, and the DMA channel to 1. Simple? Use the PS2 tools to check your audio setup if unsure - it may even be disabled!
There are basically two drivers available that will work with the ESS 488 - the SoundBlaster Pro and the ESS 488 drivers themselves. both give similar levels of performance, but the Microsoft-supplied ESS 488 drivers are better overall - as you'd imagine. Here's why:
The SoundBlaster Pro drivers install using the defaults of I/O 220h and 388h, IRQ 5, DMA 1, which matched my hardware setup. Both Wave and MIDI output was perfectly acceptable. The SB Pro Mixer device was installed, but refused to start, so no volume control icon down in the system tray.
The ESS 488 drivers used the defaults of I/O 220h and 388h, IRQ 7, DMA 1, which instantly caused me a problem as I forgot to reset the IRQ before accepting the prompted reboot. That meant the PC110 rebooted into Windows with a continuous beeping-clicking noise, but a quick change of the IRQ through Device Manager, then another reboot, sorted that out. Wave and MIDI playback was fine, but both seemed quieter - this I tracked down to the fact that the ESS Mixer sets the volume defaults to 50%. Since the ESS mixer works (!), you get a volume control icon on the system tray - hurrah!
I couldn't get it to work! It installs, then complains that the device is not functioning or the required drivers are not properly installed. This is not an issue if you choose OSR2, which I hope you would for power management reasons anyway.
